High Quality Brass Door Knobs From Access Residential Hardware
Brass has been a popular metal choice for door hardware since the late 1800s, with styles evolving from intricate to more minimalist. In the early 2000s it faded to the background as other colors and finishes rose in popularity, but in the last few years its popularity has increased again as gold has become an increasingly trendy color. These days, brass door knobs can be found in styles that compliment just about any design aesthetic - from Mid-Century Modern to Grandmillenial Style, there is a brass door knob that will add the tasteful finishing touch to any look.
If you’re looking for warm, bright hardware to liven up your doors and refresh your space, brass door knobs might be the right choice for you! The shiny, gleaming gold of brass hardware adds a bold touch that your visitors will be sure to notice. At Access Residential Hardware, we offer door knobs from high quality brands to ensure your door knobs are durable, long lasting, and come in looks you’ll love!
Privacy And Passage Door Knobs
When selecting a door knob for your door, it’s important to keep in mind what functionality you need from your door knob. The most commonly used door knob types for interior doors are privacy and passage, but some door knobs may be available as dummy door knobs as well.
Passage Door Knobs
Passage door knobs are used for interior doors in common areas, such as hallways, living rooms, or home offices. Passage door knobs latch but don’t have a locking mechanism - so don’t use them for rooms where you may want to be able to lock others out!
Privacy Door Knobs
Privacy door knobs have a locking mechanism that locks from the inside, and they may have a pinhole for unlocking from the outside in emergencies. Privacy door knobs are used for rooms that require privacy, such as bedrooms and bathrooms.
Full Dummy Door Knobs
Dummy door knobs are knobs that are designed to look just like regular passage or privacy knobs, but they don’t function like “real” door knobs because they don’t turn or have a latch. Full dummy door knobs come as a pair so you have one for each side of the door - making them ideal for double doors or French doors where only one side has a functioning door knob and you want them to match.
Half Dummy Door Knobs
Just like full dummy door knobs, half dummy door knobs lack the mechanisms that make a functioning door knob turn and latch. Half dummy door knobs only come with one knob. These are ideal for using on closet or pantry doors where you only need a knob on one side of the door.

Measuring For Correct Door Knob Fit
In order to ensure the correct fit of your new door knob, it’s important to measure your door and carefully check door knob specifications. The measurements you’ll need to take note of before ordering a door knob are backset, bore hole diameter, and door thickness.
-
Measure backset by measuring from the edge of the door to the centerline of the bore hole. Backset length is typically 2 ⅜” or 2 ¾”.
-
Measure borehole diameter by measuring across the widest part of the bore hole.
-
Measure door thickness by measuring the distance between the front and back sides of the door. The standard thickness for modern interior doors is 1 ⅜”.
Unlike with door handles, you don’t need to worry about door handing when selecting a door knob.
How To Clean And Care For Brass Door Knobs
Before cleaning your brass door knobs, make a note of what kind of finish your door knobs have. Lacquered brass door knobs have a coating that protects the metal and keeps it shiny. Be careful not to scratch lacquered door knobs, as tiny scratches may tarnish and become more noticeable over time.
To keep your brass door knobs in tip top condition, there are a few general guidelines to keep in mind for cleaning. Use only a soft, non abrasive cloth to clean brass door knobs to avoid scratching the lacquer or metal. Don’t use harsh chemicals, as they may dull the shine of brass door knobs, and avoid using hard water if possible to minimize streaking or spots.
To clean lacquered brass door knobs, use a soft cloth and warm water to gently clean the knob. You may choose to apply a light layer of a natural wax to provide some extra protection to the lacquer and the metal underneath.
There are several methods to effectively clean unlacquered brass. You can make a paste from lemon juice and baking soda, or from salt, flour, and vinegar. Apply either of these pastes and leave for two to three minutes, then wipe away with a soft cloth and clean, warm water, and finish by gently polishing with a soft, dry cloth. For a more unusual cleaning method, you can use either plain tomato sauce or plain yogurt to gently dissolve away dirt. Apply either and leave it to sit for five to ten minutes, then clean as you would for the other methods.
