High-Quality Mortise Entry Lock Sets From Access Hardware

Access Residential Hardware offers many different mortise entry sets for exterior home doors. We provide some of the most secure home locks on the market that are built to last a lifetime. A mortise entry lock will elevate the appearance of your door to give it a sophisticated, refined look.

What Is A Mortise Lock & How Does It Work?

Mortise locks are locks that are housed inside of a metal box. The box contains all of the mechanical parts for the lock mechanism and it fits into a pocket on the side of the door. Historically, mortise locks have been used for commercial buildings, because of their increased security, but mortise locks are gaining popularity in residential builds as well.

Older mortise locks used a warded locking mechanism, but newer mortise locks typically use a pin tumbler lock system. This system uses springs and pins for locking. If the wrong key is inserted into the lock, the key pins won’t align with the driver pins at the shear line, which prevents the plug from rotating and unlocking the door. When the right key is inserted, the key pins and driver pins align to allow the plug to rotate and unlock the door.

Mortise Locks Vs Cylindrical Locks

Mortise locks and cylindrical locks are the two most popular lock systems for residential homes. Cylindrical locks tend to be more common, because of their lower price point. Access Hardware also sells cylindrical locks with our exterior keyed door knobs and exterior keyed door handles.

Compared to cylindrical locks, mortise locks often provide a more elegant and classic appearance. However, mortise locks aren’t just favored for their looks. Mortise locks also provide added security. These locks bring commercial-grade security to your home. They can’t be picked with simple tools, and require expensive specialized tools to pick. Even with the right tools, mortise locks are incredibly difficult to pick.

Mortise locks need to be installed in a hollowed out pocket in the door. For this reason, they can’t be installed in doors that are less than 1⅜ inches thick. Mortise locks also aren’t as easy to install as a cylindrical lock. You’ll want to work with a professional to get a mortise lock installed in your door.
