About Baldwin Hardware

Baldwin Hardware is an American manufacturer with a rich history that embodies the fulfillment of the American dream. Baldwin Hardware was founded by Severin Fayerman in 1946.

Severin was born and raised in Poland. His family owned Silesia Screw Co. before it was seized by the German army. Severin was forced to survive on his own at the age of 17 when his mother, father, and uncle were imprisoned in German concentration camps.

Severin immigrated to the United States in 1945 and purchased the Baldwin Tool and Die company a year later. Baldwin initially only manufactured letter boxes stamped from sheets of brass, but the company quickly expanded to produce other forms of home hardware.

Baldwin has been a leader in hardware manufacturing for over 70 years. Baldwin was the first company to forge solid brass door hardware. Baldwin also developed the first lifetime PVD finish for decorative hardware. Baldwin is the exclusive manufacturer of Lifetime Satin and Polished Nickel finishes. Baldwin’s gift products were the gift of choice for the Eisenhower White House. Baldwin also created never-to-be-replicated rim locks for Jacqueline Kennedy’s Martha’s Vineyard retreat house.

Baldwin is a brand you can trust for high-quality, timeless door hardware that will provide security and style to your doors.

Baldwin Hardware FAQs

What’s The Difference Between Baldwin Estate & Baldwin Reserve?

When you filter by brand on our site you’ll notice that we offer two different Baldwin portfolios: Estate and Reserve. There are a few big differences between the two portfolios.

Estate is the highest end portfolio that Baldwin offers. Estate hardware is more expensive, but every component of the hardware is manufactured with solid forged brass and the designs feature concealed screws for a cleaner look. Estate hardware is available in 17 different finishes and is the most customizable line from Baldwin. The one downside to the Estate line is that the handles can’t be reversed.

Reserve hardware is less expensive than Estate hardware. Only the handles are produced with solid forged brass and the screws are not concealed. Reserve hardware is available in 10 different finishes and the handles can be reversed.

Are Baldwin & Schlage Compatible?

Yes, both Baldwin Estate and Baldwin Reserve hardware can be keyed to the same key as Schlage hardware. Baldwin Prestige hardware cannot be keyed to the same key as Schlage hardware, but Access Residential Hardware does not offer any items from the Prestige line.

How Should Baldwin Hardware Be Cleaned?

Baldwin’s recommendations for hardware cleaning vary depending on the finish of the hardware. Baldwin recommends spraying rubbing alcohol on hardware with living finishes and allowing the hardware to air dry. For most other finishes, Baldwin recommends cleaning with warm, soapy water and drying the hardware with a towel.
